The context is:

"I love this mp3 record! Where ___________________ it?

Which tense is correct (and why): nowadays perfect (...accept you bought....) or past simple (...did you lot buy...) ?

Hi,

sorry for not obeying the rules.

It's difficult for me to say because:

"Where did you purchase information technology?" may refer to the activity of buying, which is a matter of the past, hence past simple

while

"Where have you bought it?" can emphasize the result of a past action (the result is having the record), hence present perfect.

I'd say that "Where take you bought information technology?" is correct, though it'south difficult for me to justify why. Maybe considering of the context. First of all, there must take been a reason to put 'I honey this mp3 record' before the question ;) Secondly, it means that they have the record, every bit a result of buying and it was a rather recent purchase since the other person haven't seen information technology before.

This is a test chore for Oxford University Printing book (all the same I didn't get the key), so I'one thousand pretty sure that only one choice is correct.

I would say 'Where did yous buy it?' is the most normal in this state of affairs.

The perfective is used when the past activeness as present relevance. For example, 'Where have you lot left the key?' where normally you ask this I want to know where the central is now. The speaker already knows that the hearer has the mp3, so the perfective is less appropriate.

Thank you for your answer natkretep. I'd just similar to note that grammar exercises oftentimes are not normal ;)

Is the present perfect here incorrect? or is information technology only less preferable?

Post-obit natkrep's guidance (at #5) for nowadays relevance, I would say that, as the question stands, it is incorrect.

I concord with Paul; in AE, too, nowadays perfect (what Natkretep calls "perfective") is incorrect. The item was purchased once, a single human activity that took place in the past, so the unproblematic past tense, "where did yous buy", is the correct answer.

If you wanted to know about the person'southward experience over a period of time and continuing to the present, you might inquire, "Where have you bought records?"
